The Walcha Energy Project is situated around the town of Walcha.
Walcha is located in the New England tablelands and is approximately 55km south of Armidale, NSW. The Walcha Energy Project combines solar and wind energy generation with pumped storage hydro to provide a new, reliable source of renewable energy for NSW. The electricity generation potential is equivalent to 15% of NSW's electricity demand - more than the output of Liddell Power Station. |
Community firstThere is a strong sense of community in Walcha - ensuring that this is maintained is the cornerstone of the Walcha Energy Project.
The team behind the Walcha Energy Project has many years of experience in community and stakeholder engagement for wind, solar and other renewable energy projects. In the Walcha area, MirusWind has undertaken ongoing community consultation since 2004. The landholder agreements have been developed to balance the interests of the landholders and the developer. We have put in place an innovative revenue sharing arrangement and ownership model that delivers benefits to near neighbours and the broader community. Our team is committed to maintaining a close relationship with the community throughout the development, construction and operation stages of the project. |
Wind and solar energy with pumped storage hydro With extensive wind and solar resources on the New England tablelands, the renewable energy resource of the Walcha Energy Project is in excess of 4000MW. There are also several excellent pumped hydro energy storage sites available on the edges of the Walcha plateau. We have conducted initial studies on a number of sites which show they can be economically developed as new storage facilities and help deliver dispatchable power to the system. |
