Mid 2020 the NSW and Commonwealth Governments announced funding to design and build a new Dungowan Dam and pipeline to provide a more secure and reliable water supply for Tamworth and the Peel Valley. The new dam and pipeline are expected to be completed in 2025. Walcha Energy has been in continued discussions with WaterNSW and the NSW Government to work together to take advantage of benefits offered by co-construction of the two projects.
Options include repurposing the current dam for use as a lower reservoir, or use the new dam. A third option of a new valley dam as lower reservoir is also being explored.
